John William (Bill) Quain September 21, 1930 - December 13, 2018
John William (Bill) Quain was born September 21, 1930 to William Henry Quain and Gertrude Ellen Quain at Phoenix, Arizona. He attended school in Phoenix, Mesa, Winkelman, Mammoth, and Arizona areas where the family lived until 1947 when they moved to the Mayer area. He graduated from Mayer High School in 1948 as valedictorian. Bill worked with his father on road construction until he enlisted in the United States Air Force in December 1950 and served 18 months in France and Germany until his honorable discharge in December 1954. He then resumed working on road construction within Arizona before going to work at Tenny Feed Store in Prescott, Arizona. Bill married Helen Stella Sanders, December 22, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Fruita, Colorado by Rev. Will H. Muston. To this union two children were born, James W. and Diana L. Bill and Helen lived in Prescott, Arizona until July 1956 when they moved to the New Liberty community northwest of Mack, Colorado to the farm owned by Helen’s parents, Zella and Robert W. Sanders, Sr. with the intention of taking over the family farm. In 1957 Bill became unable to work the farm and spent many months in the Grand Junction Veterans Administration Hospital In late April 1958 he was sent to the Denver Veterans Hospital for treatment. Bill was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in July 1958 and endured the disease’s many effects losing the use of his legs at that time and spending the rest of his life wheelchair bound. Bill was a true warrior and was an inspiration to all that knew him, always with a smile on his face and with words of encouragement to all his family and friends. Discouragement was not a word in his vocabulary. Bill was an avid reader of all history and World War II books until he could not turn the pages without help. He loved God’s great outdoor creation, hunting, fishing and camping until he was physically unable to do so. The family moved to the North Fork area near Hotchkiss, Colorado to a farm purchased in November 1963. Bill loved to look out the windows at the beautiful mountains near their home until September 2018 when entering the GJVAMC Community Living Center where he passed away and went to be with his source of strength, Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. Bill was an active member of the First Baptist Church at Hotchkiss, Colorado from 1964 to 2010, serving many years as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as Adjutant for Black Canyon VFW Post 9333 at Hotchkiss, Colorado for many years, and as VFW District 11 Inspector, Department of Colorado for two years. Bill is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Helen S. Quain, of Hotchkiss, Colorado; son, James W. and wife, Tashina of Palisade; daughter, Diana L. and husband, Richard Tourney of Vancouver, Washington; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
