Steamboat Pilot and Today - April 13, 2019
Marc Champney Smith, 72, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 6, 2019 after a courageous 19-month battle with leukemia.
He is survived by Bonnie, his wife of 37 years; his children, Carter (Anne), Vivion Smith Sloan (Nate), Erica, and Grant; his seven grandchildren, Champney, Alexander, Blake, Genevieve, Naomi, Mariah, and Zachary; his siblings, Eric (Nancy), Lisa Smith Adams, Paul (Kim), and Melanie Smith Shelton; as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.
Marc was born and raised in Rochester, NY, where he graduated from The Harley School. He earned a BA in Economics from Baldwin Wallace University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.
Prior to his financial services career, Marc was a lieutenant in the United States Navy serving as Financial Controller of the Naval Air Station in Adak, Alaska.
In 1999, Marc concluded a 25-year career with SunTrust Mortgage (formerly Crestar Mortgage) serving the last ten years as CEO. Marc also served as an elected officer, then Chairman, of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America 1995-1998.
After retirement, Marc worked with several nonprofits on projects critical to organizational growth and leadership. He loved working on teams and volunteered as a teacher and coach in various school, ministry, and sports organizations.
Marc enjoyed countless outdoor activities: hiking, sailing, soccer, and especially skiing. He loved being in the mountains. In Steamboat Springs, CO, he led Mountaintop Worship for locals and visiting skiers, hosted fellowship groups, and volunteered with STARS (adaptive recreation for people with disabilities).
Marc had great faith and confident hope in Christ. Over the years, he traveled to Haiti, Mexico, Guatemala, India, and China on mission trips, and served on the Board of Directors at ICM (International Cooperating Ministries), a ministry that builds churches and trains disciples worldwide. He also supported the Healing Rooms at Bethel Church in Redding, CA and enjoyed attending services, conferences, and classes there.
Marc loved God and his family, and his love was evident in his life’s work. There will be a private celebration of life in Melbourne, FL.
