Dan Schaub took his last Harley ride on April 19, 2019, on his favorite ride with the wind in his face. It was his ride home to be with his Lord and Savior.

Father, husband, brother, son and friend, Dan lived life large and loved many things with over-the-top humor and enthusiasm, including almost anything to do with the Colorado outdoors. Dan loved anything powered by gas, where he could open up the throttle and let her rip.

Born in Odessa, Texas, in 1957, he spent his formative years in many cities of the United States, before returning and settling down in the Vail Valley with Shelly Martel. They had a full life together with many days on the Harley, on the slopes and on the dance floor.

Dan was always up for anything fun every day and any day. Being with Dan was always an adventure whether it was large or small. He had a giant, warm heart and an infectious smile. He was a charmer with those baby blue eyes. Both women and men liked being around him.

He lived by what Hunter S. Thompson wrote: "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming 'Wow!!! What a Ride!!'"

Even with all these great adventures and good times, one of his favorite things to do was to be at home. He had a nesting routine that was quite predictable each day. It would include a hot tub, a shower, his favorite black "cozy's" and a bathrobe. He would then tidy up his garage and all his tools, before settling on the couch to watch past episodes of "Big Valley," "Married with Children" or "Air Disasters."

He was a member of Gracious Savior Lutheran Church and was a good friend to those in need. He personally raised thousands of dollars over the years to support mission trips to Cuba, Indiana, and Houston. When Dan saw someone hurting he acted. He was a part of the Houston Recovery Mission Team, helping out Houston in its time of need.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Suzanne Schaub, and Shelly's mother, Lynell Martel. He is survived by his daughter, Heidi Schaub, and the love of his life, Shelly Martel. Also his parents, Dave and Linda Schaub, four siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Faith defined him. He was thankful to God for each day and every season. With grace, he embraces heaven and life ever after.

The Service is this Saturday, May 4, at Gracious Savior Lutheran Church in Edwards at 10 a.m. Reception followed immediately at Bob's Place in Avon.

God bless, "Danno."
