Peter Middleton Pritchett, MD April 25, 1955 - November 27, 2018
Peter Middleton Pritchett, MD, was born to John Henry Pritchett, Jr. and Betty Ann Middleton in Bremen, Georgia, April 25, 1955. Peter received a BA in Psychology before graduating from the Medical College of Georgia in ’85. His internship in Roanoke, Virginia, was followed by his ophthalmology residency at Vanderbilt, in Nashville, Tennessee. Of interest, his dad attended medical school at Vanderbilt. After finishing his ophthalmology residency, he decided, with his wife of 35 years, to join the Air Force. They and their son, Charles, spent two years in the Philippines at Clark Air Base, escaping Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption by 12 days. As the only ophthalmologist in the Pacific Rim, he traveled extensively to Guam, Japan, and Okinawa checking in with local optometrists throughout that operational theater. After three years at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, he secured a partnership in Montrose, Colorado. He happily practiced medicine there until his multiple myeloma diagnosis at 53 years old in 2008. He missed his patients, staff and practice every day. Multiple Myeloma is a relentless cancer of the bone marrow. He endured two stem cell transplants and chemotherapy for ten years before exhausting all avenues of treatment. His long survival with this disease is a testament to the skill and dedication of Choon Kee Lee, MD, who we, his wife and son, remember fondly, with deep respect and great honor. Peter lived most of his last years in South Carolina enjoying life. His final days were spent in Key West with his wife and son. In lieu of all other gifts, we request donations be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, or the cancer charity of your choice. Please share your memories of Peter to Susan Pritchett, 514 Brookside Ave, North Augusta, SC, 29841. He was a talented, caring physician, generous philanthropist, fiercely loyal husband, loving father, brother, and friend. "It is never so dark as when a bright light goes out."
