Mildred "Millie" Marie Phipps Gobbo September 17, 1917 - December 23, 2018
Mildred "Millie" Marie Phipps Gobbo was born on September 17, 1917, at St. Mary’sHospital inGrand Junction to Marie Walk and Joseph Cicero Phipps. She was the matriarch and oldest living relative of the well known Gobbo family who homesteaded in Grand Junction in the early 1900s. She "went home for Christmas" on December 23, 2018, resting peacefully in her sleep. Millie was the fifth of six children, all of whom proceeded her in death (John, Harry, Art, Vera, and Walt). Her mother died in 1934 when Millie was just seventeen. The family lived in downtown Grand Junction on Grand Avenue. She attended Fruita Union High School and later received a nursing degree from Mesa College. She was a nurse in the operating room at St. Mary’s Hospital for over 18 years, until 1972. On February 26, 1936, Millie married Ulindo "Ray" Gobbo. They dedicated their life to raising their four children and expanding the family businesses, later known as Gobbo Farms and Gobbo Land & Livestock. They were actively involved in the local community with the Woolgrower’s Association, the Cattleman’s Association, the Knife and Fork Club, and more. They traveled the world many times over and enjoyed friendships with countless individuals, including John Wayne, Billy Martin, Whitey Ford, Jack Dempsy, Gerald Ford, and many others. They spent time year round at their cabin and acreage on Pinyon Mesa where they raised sheep and cattle throughout their lifetime. More than anything, Millie and Ray loved to dance, and are now dancing together again. Millie was an accomplished golfer and accumulated countless tournament awards throughout her life, both in Grand Junction as a member of Bookcliff Country Club and at their winter home at Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona. After Ray’s death in January 1992, Millie continued on with their dreams and passions, lived independently in their home until well after her 100th birthday, and enjoyed time with her family above everything else. When asked about her life, Millie loved to share stories about growing up with her family, adventures with her husband, memories of her travels, and countless moments of history that can only come from living life to the fullest for well over a century. A favorite was that of her grandfather Cicero Phipps, a US Army soldier who fought in the Civil War under the command of Abraham Lincoln. When asked about her longevity, Millie always smiled when sharing her secrets: staying active and not worrying about anything. Millie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband; first born grandson, Dean Gobbo; many family members; and most of her closest friends. She is survived by her four children; Lee (Sally) Gobbo, Larry (Diane) Gobbo, Allen Gobbo, and Susan (Don) Boyles; eight grandchildren, Dean’s wife, Kelly (Mark) O’Neal, Bruce (Cori) Gobbo, Darrell Gobbo, Gina (Jerry) Ellis, Kerri (Bill) Trainor, Kellie (Marcus) Caldwell Straub, Erin Bescheinen, and Shaun Boyles; 13 great-grandchildren, Greg Trainor, Ariana (Morgan) Ramirez, Joey Zamora, Trevor Ellis, Blake (Ellen) Gobbo, Kortni (Eric) Stewart, Reis Caldwell, Lily Caldwell, Savie Vargas, Weston Bescheinen, Hadley Bescheinen, William Boyles, and Makenzey Boyles; five greatgreat-grandchildren, Ella Joy, Mia, Brooklynn, Carter, and Knox; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank everyone who cared for Millie during the last days, weeks, and months of her life, including the care teams at HopeWest, Capella of Grand Junction, and LaVilla Grande Care Center. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider a donation to HopeWest Hospice and Heirlooms for Hospice. A viewing will take place from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Her graveside service will take place at
