Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 4B Obituary - February 13, 2019

Glen, age 96, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord February 7th, surrounded by family and loving caregivers at home in the The Retreat at Harbor Cove Assisted Living Center. He was loved by all who knew him. He was born May 22, 1922, in Monticello, Utah to Walter H. Smith and Ella Gail Gillispie Smith. At the age of two weeks, Glen and his family moved back to Colorado where he, his three sisters, and two brothers were raised working on the family’s 120-acre farm in the Appleton area. He served during WWII in the U.S. Army 97th Infantry Division from October 1942 through February 14, 1946, in both the European and Pacific Theaters. Glen met his future wife, Hazel V. Fortik, at the COPECO Dance Hall. They married September 27, 1946. Hazel preceded him in death May 31, 2016. He is survived by their children, Barbara Dempsey of Casper, WY; Walter "Wally" Smith (Lorraine), of Grand Junction; Susan Phillips (Larry), of Casper, WY, and Penny Higby of Lovelock, NV; eight grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren. His long career in construction began with building his own home on J Road with hand cast adobe block and windows from an old railroad car. Following his retirement from United Companies, he continued to supply the industry with oak survey and grade stakes into his nineties. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 2970 North Ave, Grand Junction. Condolences to the family may be sent to MartinMortuary.com. Memorial contributions to HopeWest, 3090B N. 12th St., Grand Junction, CO 81506.
