Mary Louise Baker Marlow June 19, 1927 - December 21, 2018
Mary Louise Baker Marlow, 91, peacefully passed away on Friday morning, December 21, 2018. The first daughter of Lt. Col. Roscoe D. Baker and Lucille (Hawkins) Baker, she was born on June 19, 1927, on the Hawkins family farm in Grant County, Indiana. The family lived in various towns around Indiana, where her father, an officer in the Veterans Citizens Conservation Corps (CCC) was tasked with overseeing various projects. In 1939 the family moved to Fountain City, Indiana, where Mary graduated from high school in April 1945. Mary then attended nurses training at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, Florida. After graduating in September, 1948, she worked briefly at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, then moved west to Colorado Springs, where she took a position at Penrose Hospital. Mary met a pilot/mechanic from Denver, Charles Earl Marlow, who moved her to Texas, where he flew pipeline patrol for Hunt Oil Company. In the midst of his various Texas assignments, they married on May 1, 1955, in Seguin, near San Antonio, and honeymooned in Galveston. When able, she worked as a nurse during their brief stays in towns such as Alpine and Laredo. In 1956, the firm moved Earl to Pakistan for an oil exploration project. Mary soon followed, and settled in Karachi, where they met fellow ex-pats, many who became lifelong friends. Their first child, Martin, was born in Karachi July 1961. The new family soon moved to Libya, after Earl took a position with Oasis Oil Company. Political instability in the Middle East compelled them to return to Colorado in 1967. First Denver, then Aspen and finally settled in Grand Junction to raise Martin and their new daughter, Molly, born in Denver July 1967. Not one to be satisfied with simply managing a household, she expressed her artistic side by designing and assembling intricate playhouses, writing and illustrating a coloring book for Pioneer Town in Cedaredge, as well as working and volunteering as a nurse at various hospitals and facilities in Grand Junction. After Mary lost Earl in 2002, she continued to live independently in Grand Junction for the next 15 years, and was frequently seen dancing and socializing at local venues until last Spring. In April, Mary moved to Georgia to be closer to her daughter, Molly. Sadly, she was unable to travel to Indiana to attend a memorial for her sister, Beverly Sue Baker Volkman, who passed away in September. Mary is survived by son, Martin Earl Marlow; daughter, Molly Eby Dare (Christopher); granddaughters, Sarah Marie Dare, Lauren Rae Bell (Hunter) and Brooke Anne Dare; nieces, Jennifer May Mary Cully-Shaw (Gene Martinez) and Lara Blinn Volkman (Eric D. Anderson) as well as cousins, family and friends. A Memorial Service is planned for Monday, February 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway in Grand Junction.
