Walter Burrows Copeland, Jr. January 10, 1930 - November 8, 2018
Walter Burrows Copeland Jr., 88, of Grand Junction passed away November 8, 2018, at HopeWest Care Center. Walter, known to family as Butch, was born January 10, 1930, in Fowler, CO, to Walter B. Copeland Sr. and Katherine Ingram Copeland. Walter grew up in La Junta, CO. After graduation from La Junta High School, he joined the Air Force Reserves. Walter married his high school sweetheart, Allegra McNutt, on December 4, 1948. After the Air Force, he worked for the Veteran’s Administration and later the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. Walter and Allegra had three sons and lived in eight states, as well as South Korea. During these years he was a devoted husband and loving father, and he enjoyed meeting people during his travels. Walter and Allegra retired to the Grand Valley in 1991. In retirement he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He was active in the Covenant Presbyterian Church and considered Rev. Chuck Jerome his honorary son. Walter enjoyed visiting his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as keeping up with family and friends around the world through letters and social media. He was a member of the Boy Scout Koshare organization, American Legion, and Coloramo Credit Union Board of Directors. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Allegra; his parents; brother, Harold Copeland, and sister, Donna Book. He is survived by his sister, Elleen Cornelius of Denver, CO; sons, Walter B. (Penny) Copeland II of Hayden, CO; Justin (Delle) Copeland of Cedartown, GA, and Mark (Tisha) Copeland of Plano, TX; eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jerome officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 at Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church or HopeWest Hospice.
