Thomas Goodman 1931 – 2020

Tom Goodman, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, at the Center Ave Rehab Facility in Fort Collins, CO three months after heart bypass surgery. Because of COVID-19 his family couldn’t be with him when he passed but he was still surrounded by their love.

Tom was born in October 1931, in Chariton, Iowa to Oky and Gladys Goodman. He was the second of three children, and was very close to his older sister, Gene, and younger brother, Jon. In third grade his family moved to Villisca, IA where Tom excelled in school, played football and basketball, played in the school band, was a member of the school string quartet, and was Class President during his senior year at Villisca High School.

Tom went to college at Iowa State University and in 1951 decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He served for four years on the USS Kearsarge and the USS Sicily as an airplane mechanic. After his military service, he came home to Villisca and married the love of his life, Deloris (Dee) Murphy, in March of 1954.

Tom and Dee moved to Boulder, CO in 1969. Tom was a field supervisor for several McDonald’s restaurants and in 1982 was approved to become a McDonald’s Owner Operator. In 1982 they moved to Vernal, Ut and opened two McDonald’s restaurants. Tom retired in 1990 and moved to Steamboat Springs, CO to ski and be closer to his kids.

Tom’s many interests included fly fishing, skiing and golf. Golf was his passion though, and he spent many enjoyable days with friends and family on the links. He loved to remember the golfing trips he took to Scotland with his brother Jon. Golf kept him young and active.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Dee. He is survived by his sister Gene Froyd of Des Moines, IA and brother Jon Goodman of Buckeye, Arizona; two daughters, Jill Goodman of Saint George, UT, and Gina (Ron) Goodman Norton of Steamboat Springs, CO; two sons, Parke (Bonnie) Goodman of Bozeman, MT, and Brian Goodman of Steamboat Springs, CO; and one grandson, Ty Norton of Steamboat Springs, CO. Ty was also Tom’s best friend and partner in crime.

Tom’s life was spent with the people he loved, doing the things that brought him great joy.

A celebration of life service will be held in Colfax, Iowa sometime later this summer.
