THOMAS BERTRAM JR: 1919-1987

Thomas Bertram Jr., 68, died at his home in Hayden on Monday, June 15, 1987. Services, conducted by Ed Clark, were held in the Mission of Grace Baptist Church in Hayden. Interment was in the Hayden Cemetery. Betty Barnes, accompanied on the organ by Avis Funk, sang "One Day at a Time," “In the Garden" and "You Light Up My Life" at the services. Pallbearers were James, Robert E., Kevin, William T., Timothy and Tim Bertram. Honorary bearers were Stanley Riskus, Jamie Robinson, Bob Carden and Don Crouch.

Born in Oak Creek on March 27, 1919, Thomas was the son of Thomas Bertram Sr. and Mary Unk Bertram. He married Margaret Blanche Kellett in Brighton on May 15, 1936. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He joined the American Legion in Paris, France, in 1945. He was a life member of the VFW Post 9471 in Hayden and also a life member of the Elks 1577. Thomas was a coal miner and a 55-year member of United Mine Workers of America. For the past 35 years he made his home in Hayden. Prior to that, he had lived in Mt. Harris and Milner.

For several years he took part in Golden Gloves boxing competitions. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He leaves his widow; four sons, James Bertram of Erie and Robert, William and Timothy Bertram of Hayden; four daughters, Mary Ann McGilton and Nancy Pogline of Craig, Linda Bertram of Erie and Phyllis Pryse of Weaver, Ala.; four sisters, Helen Hellwig of Denver, Agnes Bell and Frances Swanson of Boulder and Dollie Jo Mastriona of Commerce City; 15 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
