Catherine Geneva Thomas of Fruita, formerly of Eagle, died June 26 of natural causes at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. She was 78.
Mrs. Thomas, a homemaker and Fruita resident since 1972, was born July 4, 1914 in Mansfield, Missouri to to Ephram Marion and Effie Mary Kingsland Sappenfield. She spent her early childhood in Kansas and Wyoming and moved with her parents during the 1920s. She graduated from Red Cliff High School and was Valedictorian of her class.
She married Carl O. Thomas in Grand Junction on Dec. 4, 1945.
Mrs. Thomas lived in Minturn until 1950 where she relocated to Eagle, where she lived until moving to Fruita. She was employed by the New Jersey Zinc Company and the U.S. Postal Service in Gilman. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was very active until her health began to fail. She enjoyed handiwork and needlework.
Survivors include her husband, Carl; her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Jean Thomas of Clifton; three grandsons, Aaron, Seth, and Paul Thomas of Clifton; and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister, Nora Morris, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held June 20 at the Grace Community Church in Fruita, with Pastor Ron McMullan officiating. Burial was at the New Elmwood Cemetery, Fruita.
