AUTO TAKES LIFE OF SMALL CHILD
---
The community was deeply shocked Sunday when Jimmy Thompson, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Thompson of Eagle was struck while crossing the highway, by a car driven by Arthur R. Riley of Kansas City, Mo., and fatally injured.
Jimmy and a number of companion were fishing in the Eagle River along the highway. near the old river bridge Sunday morning, when he and a companion started the highway. The other child, his cousin Barbara Doran, saw the approaching car and warned Jimmy, but too late. The driver of the car and thrown to the pavement, suffering head and body injuries which proved fatal, he dying shortly after being taken to a hospital in Glenwood Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Riley and family were on their summer vacation, and were enroute to Glenwood when the accident occurred. Mr. Riley was absolved from any blame by the courtesy patrol who investigated the affair, and was himself near a nervous breakdown over the death. He stated that he had lost a small grandchild in a similar accident within the past year.
James Lynn Thompson was born in Trenton, Mo., January 25, 1933, moving to Colorado with his parents, who have lived in Eagle for three or four years. He was a lovable child, popular with his playmates, and the shock to those with whom he was playing when the terrible accident occurred was great.
Funeral services held from the Methodist Church in Eagle at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday were largely attended by friends of the family and the child's playmates. Rev. F. W. Casselman delivered a very touching funeral discourse, and during the services Miss Mary Lynn Fulton of Beggs, Okla., sang "Mighty Like a Rose," while Mrs. Casselman and daughters, Virginia and Maxine, sang, "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling." Following the church services the little body was laid tenderly and lovingly to its early resting place in Valley View Cemetery in Eagle, Paul Andre of the Andre Funeral Home having charge of the burial. Pall bearers were parents of the near playmates of the lad, Judge William H. Luby, Floyd Ping, Leo Fessenden, and Eldon Wilson.
The child is survived by his parents and sister, Patsy, besides other relatives all of whom will miss the child sorely. Those surviving have the most profound sympathy of the entire community, who mourn with them over this untimely death.
