Terry W. Thompson, a 30-year resident of the Eagle-Gypsum area, died suddenly on Sunday following complications of head injuries after completing the Gypsum Daze 5K race he so enjoyed. A celebration of life will take place at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Lundgren Amphitheater in Gypsum Town Park.

Terry, 56, is remembered as a beloved father, husband and “Morfar” (grandfather). His love of life and family can be found in the legacy he leaves behind, including his artwork, craftsmanship and humor. As an organ donor, his life will continue to live on through others.

One of Terry’s greatest joys was coaching the Tiny T's soccer team which included his beloved grandsons Hunter, 7 and Reece, 5. Terry loved spending time with his grandsons by sharing his passion for art, storytelling and laughter.

He was always thinking of others instead of himself by fulfilling numerous after-hours requests and most recently completion of a colorful mural that was displayed at the Trinity Church in Edwards as part of Vacation Bible School.

Terry was employed by the Eagle County Airport as a mechanical technician. He was also a skilled master plumber whose work can be seen in numerous homes throughout the area. He was involved in a variety of civic activities, including service on the Gypsum Planning and Zoning Commission in the 1980s and running as a candidate for mayor of Gypsum during the same decade.

Terry was born in Chariton, Iowa, on Nov. 24, 1951. He moved to Colorado Springs when he was in junior high school. He graduated from William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs in 1970 and was later a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Terry married Isi in 1975 following a year-long courtship. They celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary in May this year.

In addition to wife Isi, he is survived by his son, Eric, of Santa Monica, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Bryan and Nicole Kohrmann of Gypsum; and grandsons Hunter and Reece.

He is also survived by his parents, Flo and Charles Thompson of Grand Junction; sisters Debbie (Jim) Holt of Oregon and Dixie Thompson of Washington state; in-laws Ulla-Majken and Jim Lugg, of Denver; sisters-in-law Linda (Ed) Hladik of Arvada, Colo., Mickey Johnson, of South Carolina, Sherry Stacks, of South Carolina, and Sharon (Greg) Lang, of Utah; and numerous aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Chuck Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established at FirstBank to help with medical expenses under the Terry Thompson Memorial Fund.
