Obituaries

Basalt Journal page 1 - January 21, 1899

J. Earl Timberlake was born at Querida, Colorado, Dec. 12, 1881. Died at Leadville, Colorado, Jan [illegible], 1899, [illegible].
As soon as Earl reached his mother's home on Christmas Day, a physician was immediately summoned, and all that human power could do, was done to alleviate his sufferings, but all to no avail, even after the physician came he could he could scarcely be persuaded to take his bed.
He grew worse each day. When asked how he was, would always say he was better. Later another physician was called. Poor Earl only lived one week after his arrival home.
Four days before the death angel claimed him, his mother asked him if he was afraid to die. He replied in a clear sweet voice, "No mamma I am ready at any time, and would be better off if God would call me." What a comfort to his mother to know he was ready and not afraid to die. He even told her the clothes he wanted to be buried in.
He begged to sit up the day he died. He wanted so much to see one of his aunt's and she arrived just six hours before his death, he knew her and talked with her.
Many kind friends came to his mother in the sad hours of her affliction, patiently and faithfully watched over her son, with tender hands and loving hearts administered to his wants. While suffering intensely, he was conscious till death claimed him.
His funeral was beautiful and impressive. Rev. Forbs of the Congregational Church spoke comforting words to the family and friends from the book of St. John, 20:15, "Jesus said unto her, woman why weepest thou." Hymns "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Siloam" were sung.
He was laid to rest in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Leadville. The beautiful flowers from several lodges, friends, and pall bearers speak volumes to his heartbroken mother. Pall bearers were boys of his age.
