John Michael Sullivan passed
away at his home in Grand
Junction, CO, on March 7, 2021.
John was the oldest son of
Margaret and John P. Sullivan,
born in Anaconda, Montana.
Hitchhiking from Anaconda
to Butte, Montana, on July 22,
1957, he joined the Navy. Pearl
Harbor was his home during four years active duty as a “Tin Can
Soldier” on the USS Radford DD-446 Destroyer.
In 1970, shortly after receiving BA in Economics/Computers, he
left California for Australia to work at the Remote Radar Satellite
Tracking Station in Woomera. John stayed in Australia until 1994,
lecturing and teaching at the South Australian Institute of Business
and Technology. He retired from teaching at age 55, returned to the
USA and worked for Mesa County IT until December 2010.
John’s love of sports began in his hometown, where he was known
as “Johnny” and played basketball, baseball and football. He was a
lifelong NY Yankees fan. Inspired by his son, Steve, he began golf
in 1992. John played in both Lincoln Park and Tiara Rado Men’s
Clubs. Fishing Rock Creek for trout, held a joy like no other for
John.
John’s daughter, Debi, was born in Oahu. His sons, Nick and
Steve, in Australia. His son, Nick, brother, Bobby Joe, and parents
preceded him in death. Surviving are son, Steve (Malin), of
Germany; wife, Barbara, and step-daughter, Pam (Alan). He has
four grandchildren, Matilda, Isabel, Joseph and Nic
