Guy Leonard “Alex”
Alexander, 96, of Grand
Junction, died April 1, 2021,
at the HopeWest Ferris Care
Center.
Guy was born May 4, 1924,
to Dickerson Philip and Maria
Rufas Alexander in Burgin,
Kentucky. He spent his
childhood in Washington, DC, where he attended elementary and
high school.
In 1942, Guy traveled to Baltimore, Maryland and enlisted as
an Apprentice Seaman in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Following his
basic training, he was sent to the Pearl Harbor Navel Receiving
Station where he served on a Yard Boiler as Ship’s Cook. In 1944
he was transferred to the USS Natrona and he was injured aboard
that ship. As a result of his injuries, Guy was later transferred to
the Convalescent Naval Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
He was sent back to active duty aboard the USS Dover where he
served until his discharge in 1946 with the rank of Ship’s Cook
Second Class.
During his stay in Glenwood Springs, he met Helen Louise Fiene.
They were married on April 28, 1946, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
They made their home in Washington, DC, with his mother for the
first two years of their marriage. Upon returning to Grand Junction
they lived with Helen’s parents for three years before building a
home of their own.
Guy was a baker and cake decorator in Washington, DC and at
Home Style Bakery in Grand Junction. Upon completion of his
GED, he became a draftsman for a local engineering firm.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Helen; daughter, Peggy
(Steven) Kramer, of Grand Junction; grandsons, Steven Kramer, of
Arvada, CO, and Douglas Kramer of Evergreen, CO.
Alex was a life member of the National Rifle Association (NRA),
Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and Orchard Mesa Gun Club.
He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church. When
he retired in 1986, he was able to truly enjoy his interests which
included competitive target shooting, gardening, woodworking,
painting and reading. He and Helen took cruises to many places
including Alaska, the Panama Canal, England, Scotland, Ireland as
well as a trip ‘Around the Horn’.
Thanks to the Veteran’s Administration, who provided him with
low-vision aids, he was able to continue to read. Thank you to the
HopeWest Home Team and the Care Center Team. They were all
very special to Guy, and his family is grateful for the loving and
compassionate care they gave to him.
A Military service will be held at the Veteran’s Cemetery in
Grand Junction April 16, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. Memorial service will
be held at a later date.
