Douglas Earl
Dean, Sr.
May 15, 1930 - February 6, 2021
Douglas Earl Dean, Sr., of
Grand Junction, CO, passed
away at his home on February 6,
2021. He was 90 years old.
Doug was born at home on
Mamm Creek, in Silt, Colorado,
on May 15, 1930, the sixth
child of Kathryn and Robert
Dean. In 1937, after the death
of his father, Robert, Kathryn remarried widower, Hugh P. Flynn,
and they moved to Divide Creek. Doug affectionately called him
“Pop” and counted himself lucky to be raised by such a warm and
wonderful man.
Doug grew up in the Rifle and Silt areas where he attended
school, graduating from eighth grade in 1945. At that time, he left
school and began working full-time on his family’s farm and ranch.
In 1948, Doug joined the U.S. Navy and was later called to active
duty in the Korean War. He served as a 3rd class petty officer aboard
the USS Bradford and saw action in, and around Korea before
leaving the Navy in 1953. Doug attended several ship reunions, and
was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
After leaving the Navy, Doug returned to Colorado and worked at
mining uranium ore in Uravan. Later, he went to work for Climax
in Grand Junction until finally starting work with Public Service in
1955. Doug worked at the Cameo power plant until his retirement
in 1981.
He married Betty Bachelor and had five children. They later
divorced. In 1968, he met and married Patricia Anderson King.
Together, they combined their children and created a strong, robust
family that kept them busy. One of Doug’s greatest accomplishments
was being a father. He was always there for his children and shared
their good and bad times.
Doug is survived by his wife, Patricia Dean; son, Wayne (Teri)
King of Almagordo, NM, and daughters, Letha (Rex) Nye, and
Cheryl (Randy) Martens, both of Grand Junction, CO, and Donna
(Jim) Farley of Hollsville, TX. He is also survived by his only
living brother, Howard Dean of Delta, CO; sister, Mary Ann Flynn
Bogani of Grand Junction, CO, and many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in passing by three of his sons, Douglas Dean,
Jr., Dwayne Dean, and Craig Dean; four brothers, and seven sisters
(Deans and Flynns); his mother, Kathryn, and step-father, Hugh
Flynn, Sr.
A graveside service will be held at Memorial Gardens on Friday,
June 18, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will be at Long’s
Park June 19, from 1 - 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the Salvation
Army, a charity he believed in and supported
