Frances
H. Born
July 24, 1948 - February 27, 2021
Frances Hollick Born
was born July 24, 1948, in
the Philippines, to Francis
Haas Hollick and Wanda
Kirch Hollick. Her father
was career Army and
as a result, they moved
approximately every three years living in seven states.
Fran graduated from high school in Mitchell, SD,
in 1966. She was also an adopted member of Grand
Junction High School, class of 1959. She attended college
at the University of South Dakota and received her B.A.
degree from Northern State College of Aberdeen, South
Dakota, in 1970. In 1982, she received her Master of
Education from the University of Texas, El Paso. Fran
taught art in School District 51 for 34 years, retiring in
2004, after influencing hundreds of students.
Fran was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society
for 42 years. During her years of teaching, she was
awarded the Mesa Valley Education Association Teacher
of the Week on December 15, 1993, the Grand Junction
Chamber of Commerce Teacher Recognition Award
in 1991, and the Colorado Art Education Association
Middle School Art Teacher of the Year for 2004.
In 1973 she married Phil Born, a Grand Junction
native, and they adopted Frank, their son, in 1983.
Frank preceded Fran in death in 2014 due to cancer.
Fran was a working member of the Crafting Angels
of the First United Methodist Church of Grand
Junction. There, she was noted for specializing in
handmade greeting cards; they have numbered in the
thousands. Fran also sang in the First United Methodist
Church choir for 45 years. She enjoyed working with
the Community Food Bank, took patients to doctors
appointments, and hospital visits for several years, and
served on the Community Concert Board.
Fran taught her entire career at School District 51;
12 years at Grand Junction High School, and 22 years
at East Middle School. She loved working with young
people and watching them find out they could do art
work.
She enjoyed much in life. She thoroughly enjoyed
family, friends, her dogs, teaching, art (especially
drawing and water color), knitting, helping others,
reading, a good joke, or pun. She was frequently asked
to leave the teacher’s lounge due to her puns.
She loved to go camping on Grand Mesa in their
RV. She so enjoyed marveling at God’s creation and
watching little “critters”. As for fishing, she typically
would catch the most and the biggest, much to the
delight of Phil.
Over the years, Fran and Phil were able to take four
cruises. They felt so fortunate to have gone on their last
cruise to the British Isles, as they were able to visit their
niece, Peggy Clarke, and her family in Scotland.
On February 27, 2021, Fran was called to the Lord
due to complications of recently diagnosed ALS. She
is survived by her husband, Phil; brother, Royed (Beth)
Hollick, of Custer, SD; niece, Emmalee Hollice, of
Spearfish, SD; nephew, Zachary Hollick, of Rapid City,
SD; niece, Peggy (Daniel) Clarke, and great-nieces,
Matilda and Ella, of Scotland; beloved dog, Zippy; five
adopted granddaughters, and three grandsons of the
heart.
Fran gave so much love to all. There is so much more
that could be said about this bright beam of light and
love in our lives.
Memorials should be sent in her name to the First
United Methodist Church of Grand Junction.
A Memorial service for Fran will be July 24, 2021, at
10:00 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, in Grand
Junction.
Harley
Maddock, Jr.
March 13, 1928 - July 9, 2021
Harley, age 93, passed
away in Grand Junction,
CO, at The Center at
Foresight on July 9, 2021.
He was born in
Gloversville, New York, to
Harley and Ester Maddock.
He graduated from Gloversville High School in 1946.
In 1947, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was
honorably discharged in 1949.
In 1951, he and two buddies drove to Anchorage,
Alaska seeking adventure, new surroundings, and
money for college. This trip lasted 14 years.
In December of 1951, he met the love of his life,
Marion G. Preston, at the anchorage Ski Club, and they
married June 21, 1952. Anchorage was a much smaller
city then and was great for fishing, hunting, hiking, and
touring various cities. The annual Sled Dog Race from
Anchorage to Nome was a great event to look forward
to.
Harley was employed with the Army & Air Force
Exchange Service (A&AFES) for 32 years. During this
time, he attended several management training facilities
and was selected for the A&AFES Emp. Program which
involved transfers to New York, Virginia, Texas, South
Korea, Germany, and Denver, where he retired in 1983.
His transfers to the different States and Countries were
interesting and challenging and was an opportunity to
meet many military and civilian people over the many
years with A&AFES. Providing PX and AF service to
military shoppers was an enjoyable experience.
After retirement, he enjoyed golf and later he became
interested in the repair and custom fitting of golf clubs
and related retail items. His knowledge in retail was
okay. However, in repair and custom fitting was another
challenge. So, he attended the Maltby Professional Club
Making Academy in Newark, Ohio, which is the worlds
foremost authority on golf equipment repair and custom
fitting. In the latter part of 1986, the golf shop, named
“The Klub Doctor,” became a reality. He enjoyed it very
much and it gave him great pleasure to meet and serve
his many customers.
He was a long-time member of the First United
Methodist Church in Grand Junction. He enjoyed the
fellowship and volunteering in the church social and
fundraising activities very much.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years,
Marion; son, Steve; brother, Charles; sister, Irene, and
his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First United
Methodist Church, 522 White Ave., Grand Junction,
CO. on July 28, 2021, at 2:00 p.m.
Memorial donations, in Harley’s name, can be made
to the First United Methodist Church and HopeWest.
