Ira (Slats) Virden died December 20, 1978 in the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs after a long illness.

He moved to Colorado in 1927 settling in Oak Creek where he worked in the coal mines of the area. In 1937 he suffered a broken back in a mine accident which eventually forced him to retire from mining. He moved to McCoy in 1954 where he engaged in ranching until 1962, then retired to his present home which he and his family built at Copper Spur. Slats enjoyed the outdoors and was an expert hunter and guide, having bagged several mountain lions, bears, moose and other big game animals in Colorado and Alaska. He was a member of the Egeria Lodge No. 106 AF & AM and Edith Chapter No. 61 Order of the Eastern Star at Yampa, Colo.

On May 24, 1932 he was united in marriage to Arline Adams of the Hilton Gulch area near Steamboat Springs. To this union was born six children; one daughter, Jodine, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Arline of Copper Spur, daughter Inez Baldwin of Creighton, Neb., son Jack Virden of Craig, Colo., daughter Dorothy Weldon of Vernal, Utah, daughter Ruby Forster Culverwell of McCoy, Colo., son Frank Virden of Vernal, Utah, 11 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, brother Bill Newman of Lafayette, La., uncle Frank Virden of Bow Legs, Okla.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 23, 1978 at the McCoy Community Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Carl officiating. Interment was made at the McCoy Cemetery by Egeria Lodge 106, AF & AM. Root Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
