Eagle Valley Enterprise - January 29, 1998

An Eagle-Vail man is suspected of unintentionally running over and killing a pedestrian on Highway 6 last weekend and then fleeing the scene.

Colorado State Patrol officials believe that John Reno, 27, fatally struck Samantha Whitcomb, 23, of Eagle-Vail with his vehicle as she crossed Highway 6 near the Shop and Hop, formerly Anne's Market.

Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Kevin Crider and trooper Jeffrey Metcalfe, who were patrolling the area, spotted Reno driving westbound at high speed and with only one working headlight. They stopped Reno about a half mile west of Avon Road after a short pursuit and detained him upon noticing heavy damage to the front of his pickup. The officers then received the report on the nearby hit-and-run accident from dispatch. Reno was booked into the Eagle County jail and released on bond pending formal charges.

Police continue this week to investigate the fatal accident, which occurred about 2 a.m. on Saturday. Alcohol was a factor according to a preliminary report.
