On December 22, 2021,
Arloene Rentfro Goley fell
asleep in Jesus, at home
on the Redlands in Grand
Junction, CO.
Her parents and
grandparents had been
missionaries for the Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Portugal, Central, and South America. Her paternal
grandparents, Clarence and Mary Rentfro, had planted
the church in Portugal in 1904, and her father spent his
childhood there. Because of WWI they evacuated to
Portuguese Brazil. Her maternal grandparents, Alvin
and Luella Allen, ministered in Peru and Brazil, and
her great-grandparents, Hiram and Anna Goodrich,
pastored in Panama when the Panama Canal was being
built. Arlo’s parents, Charles Rentfro and Esther Allen,
met in Sao Paulo, married in the jungle in Brazil, and
Arlo was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, September 26,
1930, and her sister, Elaine, a year later, December
10, 1931. They returned to the United States in 1935,
where her father worked in the Treasury Department of
the General Conference. In 1940 they moved to Cuba
where her father was treasurer of the conference. Some
of Arlo’s most pleasant memories were during this time.
They returned to Takoma Park, MD because of WWII,
where she finished her elementary and secondary
schooling and her RN Degree at Washington Adventist
Hospital & University. In 1950, a young graduate from
Union College, John E. Goley, came to Washington
SDA Seminary to get his M. Th. Arlo and John met,
and that started their 70 plus years together.
They married June 24, 1951, and moved back to
Kansas, then Colorado, and New Mexico for 41 years
of Ministry. Arlo worked as an RN for 51 years in a
number of hospitals, and for about five years she taught
nursing for Union College, Front Range Community
College, Arapahoe Community College, and Colorado
Mesa University.
She and John loved to travel, and have been to all of the
states and in 80 different countries, including in 2004,
the centennial for the 1904 arrival of her grandparents
and father in Portugal. They visited four African game
parks, and were in a Tanzanian park on 9/11, not sure
they could get back home.
Well, now she sleeps, until we can all get together
when Jesus comes back.
Preceding her in death are her parents; sister, Elaine,
and baby son, David Michael, whom she looks forward
to holding in heaven.
She is survived by husband, John E.; son, John A.
(Kathy) Goley; daughter Brenda (Randy) Morris;
grandchildren, Esther (Robbie) Lacelle; Levi (Ravin)
Morris; Titus Morris; Grace Morris; Jennifer (Leandro)
Bizama, and Andrew (Adrienne) Goley, and greatgrandsons, Matias, Evan, and Elias Bizama, Owen
Goley, and Philip LaCelle.
May the Lord help us to be there on that grand day
when Jesus returns!
