Harry passed away peacefully after a 4-year struggle with multiple health issues. He was born in Costa Rica the second of six children to Harrison and Matilda Dike. At age 6 they moved to the US, and he was raised in Westchester, California. He was an avid little leaguer, competitive wrestler and surfer. At the age of 15 he jumped a train for Alaska to work in a logging camp and returned to complete his High School education.
On the day of graduation, he left for Aspen, Colorado, with his BFF Tom Rupert. Together they worked at the Village Pantry in the winter (waiting tables and cooking), and Construction in the summer. Mary came on a Spring break ski trip and the two have been married since 1969.
Steamboat was his dream when he came to build the first home in Steamboat II and followed up with 10 more homes. In 1976 he purchased the old A&W Root Beer structure and built the “Burger Express”, an adventure and vision he followed for over 20 years. Harry called Steamboat Springs his home for 52 years and loved it. He became friends with all the merchants and people he encountered, talking their ears off and enjoying their company.
Harry is survived by his wife Mary and four children: Harrison, Dustin, and JoDee of Steamboat Springs, and Joseph Dike of Arizona. His grandson Peyton Dike of Durango, and two sisters: Daphne Fernandez and Gloria Ulloas of California.
Harry will be missed in our lives but never forgotten. He was a hard worker, good father and faithful husband. Thank you, Lord, for sharing him with us. His memories will last throughout our lifetime.
A celebration of Harry’s life will be at the Bud Werner Library on 13th street and Lincoln Ave. Saturday, September 10th from 12-3. Join us and share a casual time together.
