Homestead man found dead in backyard

A 45-year-old Homestead man was found dead in his back yard Thursday of an apparent gun shot wound to the head, authorities said.

A roommate found the body of Patrick Lang sometime around 7 p.m. in the field behind their Edwards home, Eagle County Deputy Coroner Kara Bettis said.

The roommate last spoke to Lang Thursday morning. Lang wasn't in the home when the roommate returned from work around 6:30 p.m., so the roommate called a friend to search for Lang.

They found his body behind the house, Sherriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Andree said.

Lang died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound, but the exact time hasn't been determined, Bettis said. He was already dead when authorities arrived, She said.

Lang, a long-time resident of Eagle County, worked for the Eagle-Vail golf course until it closed for the season in October. He also worked for four years as a copy editor at the Vail Daily. Since April, he had been working part time for the company.

Co-workers Friday were shocked to hear of his passing.

"Pat has been a fixture on the Vail Daily copy desk during my time here. He was a steady hand and quick with a smile," Vail Daily Publisher Steve Pope said. "He will be missed."

Lang is survived by his son, who lives in Dallas and his mother, father, brother and sister, who live in the Denver area.

A memorial service will be held in Edwards. The date has not yet been determined.
