John Talucci dies Dec. 21 of cancer

John F. Talucci, who friends and family said was known for his smile, died of cancer Dec. 21, surrounded by family. A funeral mass was held for him Dec. 26 at the Interfaith Chapel in Beaver Creek.

He was born Oct 11, 1939, in Newark, Del., and later went on to Lehigh University, where he earned his degree in chemical engineering. Immediately upon graduation in 1961, he began working with Philadelphia based Rohm and Hess Co., which employed him his entire career.

His career with Rohm and Hess took him to Canada and Mexico, where he earned his master's degree in business at the University of the Americas. After 10 years in Mexico, the family moved on to Brazil, then Miami and ultimately Philadelphia. Over this time Mr. Talucci was vice president of three different divisions.

In 1998, Talucci and his wife, Sue, moved to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It was in Colorado where he found the time to pursue many of his passions, his family said. They said he was committed to the Mexican community and enjoyed teaching them math, science and English. He loved taking them skiing, skating or to the theater for the first time, they said. He was a master gardener who took pride in his personal tomato crop, but even more pride in his work at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and his volunteer work in the community garden, his family said.

His definition of success was "the deep personal self satisfaction knowing that you do your absolute best in whatever endeavors you choose in life."

Survivors include his wife, Susan, his six children--John, Tom, Mark, Dan, Susie, Matt and their spouses; and his grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Philadelphia in January. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donation to The Shaw Regional Cancer Center, 322 Beard Creek Drive, Edwards, Colo., 81632, or the Vail Valley Home Health and Mountain Hospice, P.O. Box 40,000, Vail, Colo., 81657.
