Lifelong skier, disabled skiing advocate McCafferty dies at 70.

Donald Francis "Don" McCafferty, who had strong ties with the Vail Valley since the late '60's, died Sept 18 of cancer in Castle Rock. He was 70.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 30, 1931 to Alex and Frances McCafferty, he was raised in that area and attended the University of Utah.

He served four years as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.

McCafferty met and married Marlene Beck in 1957. In 1960, he was transferred to Denver with Ortho Pharmaceuticals Corp., a division of Johnson and Johnson.

McCafferty later joined the Stryker Corp. as the Western Division Manager.

An avid skier, he and his family purchased a home in Vail in 1967, just five years after it was founded.

McCafferty was instrumental in securing prosthesis for the Amputee Skier Program at Arapahoe Basin, as well as the Winter Park Handicapped Skier Program. He was a principal in the Daleboot Ski Boot Company in Salt Lake City. McCafferty was also an accomplished golfer. For the last 17 years, he was a resident of Costa Mesa, Calif.

He is survived by daughters, Shauna McCafferty of Parker and Kelley McCafferty Bradley of Minturn, who has lived in the Vail area since 1981; a sister, Patricia Cluff, of Groveland, Calif. and nephews, Stuart Cluff of Washington, Robert Cluff of California and Douglas Cluff of Rhode Island.

A service at sea will be held by the American Legion Post 291 in Newport Beach, Calif. Donations in Don McCafferty's memory may be made to the American Legion Post 291 or to any charity of your choice.
