Girl with local ties killed in flood in India

The daughter of part-time Eagle County residents died on a trek in the Indian Himalaya in September.

Ashley Palumbo, 22, was on a round-the-world trip after graduating from the University of Washington when she disappeared with a friend, Tyler Mondloch, also 22.

After graduating this past June, they left for an extended trip, planning stops in Europe, Israel, Egypt, India, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia.

They were swept away by the flooding Chandra River while trekking between the small village of Chatru and the town of Manali in northern India.

After the couple disappeared, families funded an exhaustive search for the pair, only discover that they had perished in the raging river.

Their bodies have not been recovered, and likely won't be, but officials are almost certain that raging flood waters overwhelmed the two trekkers.

Palumbo is survived by her parents, Ralph and Marlys Palumbo, part-time residents of Cordillera, and Jane Ashe; her sister, Anna, a Vail resident and Beaver Creek children's ski school supervisor; and brother, Andrew.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. at Saint Mark's Cathedral in Seattle, Wash.

Friends of the families have established a fund that will be used to create a scholarship or charitable foundation in Ashley's and Tyler's names.

In lieu of flowers, the families are asking that contributions be made to the "Ashley Palumbo/Tyler Mondloch Memorial Fund," c/o 6100 Columbia Center, 701 Fifth Ave., Seattle, Wash. 98104 or to the American Red Cross.
