Joyce Power, a long
time Grand Junction res-
ident passed away peace-
fully at home on Saturday,
May 13, 2023. She was 90
years old. Joyce Yvonne
Sutherland was born at
her Mamaw’s home on
the Redlands to Loyal A.
(Sox) Sutherland and Edna
Copley Sutherland. She
grew up on the Redlands
and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1951.
She met her future husband, Frank Power of Palisade while
dragging main street in Grand Junction. Frank and Joyce
were married July 13, 1952 at the First Baptist Church
in Palisade. They lived in Uravan, CO; Camp Hanford,
WA; then returned to Uravan. In 1962 Frank and Joyce
bought land on the Redlands and built a home where they
raised their family. Joyce worked in the Medical Records
Department of St. Mary’s Hospital; as a secretary and
data entry person for C.D. Smith’s Drug Co., and Union
Carbide-Umetco. She retired from Union Carbide in 1991
after 27 years. She loved camping, traveling and yard work.
Joyce is preceded in death by her mother and father, her
husband, and brothers Jim and Larry Sutherland. She is
survived by her children, Wendy Power (Bob O’Brien) of
Evergreen, CO; Barry (Cristal) Power of Grand Junction;
Diane Power of Grand Junction; and granddaughter Sarah
Herron (Dylan Brown) of Carbondale, CO.; Sister-in-Law
Annette Miller (Frank) of LaGrange, IL and many niec-
