She spent all of her life
in Grand Junction except for 2 years in Washington, D.C.
She graduated from Grand Junction High School with the

W. Woolworths and following graduation she worked as a
bookkeeper at the United States Bank. She also worked
at Home Style Bakery and then she became secretary and
administrative assistant at the First Congregational Church.
A position that she held for 24 years.
Helen was working at the US Bank when she met Guy
‘Alex’ Alexander. Alex had been injured in the Navy and
was stationed at the Colorado Hotel in Glenwood Springs,
Colorado. They were married on April 28, 1946 in the First
Congregational Church. They planned to honeymoon in
New York, but during transfer in Denver, they found they
were not scheduled on the same train and it took them five
days to change their tickets. They eventually made their
way to his mother’s home in Washington, D.C. where they
lived for two years. Upon returning to Grand Junction,
they lived with Helen’s parents on North 12th street for
three years before building their own home at 1935 North
4th Street in 1952.
Helen had a talent and love of hand embroidery. She trea-
sured the many friendships she made in the Embroiderer’s
Guild of America (EGA) over the many years she was a
member. When she found that her vision was failing, she
picked up her knitting and continued to participate in the
guild knitting caps for cancer patients, newborns and the
Shepard Ministry at Church. She was also a member of
ABWA (American Business Women’s Assn.) and was hon-
ored as ‘Woman of the Year’ in 1982. She enjoyed coordi-
nating the GJHS Class of ‘45 reunions and more recently
luncheons with the remaining classmates.
