Daniel “Pop Pop” Learned
Hebard died unexpectedly in his beloved home on July 13, 2023. Born December 3, 1945, to Elizabeth and Frederick Hebard of Philadelphia, PA. Daniel spent his childhood summers in Camden, ME developing a love of sailing and the outdoors. He also developed a passion for bird hunting and marksmanship, becoming a national rifle champion. He graduated high school from Lawrence Academy in 1965.

Daniel attended the University of Denver and was drafted into the Army in his sophomore year. Daniel served from 1966 – 1969 during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1969 as an Army 1st Lt. He remained in the Army Reserves and returned to the University of Denver to study Civil Engineering until 1972.

Daniel moved to Steamboat Springs in late 1972. As a skilled carpenter, he spent many years building his home in Elk River Valley, where he and his wife Maureen raised their two daughters alongside a menagerie of farm animals and developed a special love of horses. Despite being severely disabled after a car accident in 1986, Daniel went on to own several successful businesses throughout Routt County. After his wife Maureen passed away in 2018, he fulfilled their dream of traveling the country and visiting National Parks from Joshua Tree, CA, to Acadia, ME. Along the way, Daniel went back to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Folkston, GA, the home of the Hebard Lumber Company run by his grandfather, Charles Hebard, and where he had spent his childhood years hunting in the swamps with his father, Frederick Hebard. An avid photographer, he documented his travels with many spectacular photographs.

Daniel will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, devout Christian, and free spirit. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and his spiritual community at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Steamboat Springs. His legacy is marked by his astounding resilience, kindness, warm heart, and resolution to live life on his terms. He is surpassed in death by his wife of 41 years Maureen Hebard, parents Elizabeth and Frederick Hebard, sisters Mary Luther, Sandra Gardner, and Elaine Pierce, and brother Cruger Fowler. He is survived by his brother Frederick Hebard, daughters Julia Hebard and April Weaver, son-in-law Jason Weaver, and grandchildren Kate and Luke Weaver. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
