Jim BUCHHOLZ Services Saturday
James O. Buchholz, one of the few remaining pioneers of Eagle county, passed away in the Barz Home in Glenwood Springs, November 21, 1951, following a long illness. Mr. Buchholz was 84 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at the Farnum Chapel in Glenwood Springs, Saturday morning, and burial will be in the Eagle cemetery.
The son of Nicholas and Mary Adams Buchholz, he was one of five children and was born in Maryland, coming to Colorado when he was a small boy.
His father, a veteran of the Civil War, first was attracted to Leadville when they came west in 1879, where the family lived until 1882 when they moved to the Eagle River Valley, and took up a farm that is now a part of the Lloyd Ranch east of Eagle. When the older Mr. Buchholz sold that property, the family took up a homestead on Buchholz Mesa, north of town.
In 1890, the family conducted a butcher shop in Red Cliff. For 24 years the older Buchholz served Eagle county as assessor, with the son, Jim his deputy at the time of his father's death, when he became assessor.
Jim Buchholz was Forest Ranger in this section of the county for many years. Photography was Mr. Buchholz's hobby, and with his work in the mountains of Eagle County, his collection of scenic pictures is outstanding.
He had been in failing health for several years, and in a nursing home in Glenwood for several months.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Hannah JOHNSTON of Eagle; a niece, Mary Frances GAMBLE of Eagle; Leo GAMBLE, Wm. JOHNSTON and Nick BUCHHOLZ, nephews; and other nieces and nephews.
