ELIZABETH BEDELL DEATH CLOSES CHAPTER OF EAGLE COUNTY HISTORY, by Elizabeth M. Lewis.
The passing of Elizabeth (QINLAN) BEDELL brought to a close a chapter in Colorado West history. She was the last of the John Patrick QUINLAN family.
She, along with the rest of her pioneer family, left her mark on the lives of many people in the area. Mrs. BEDELL will be sadly missed by all. The world has been a much better place to live in because she was a part of it.
Elizabeth QUINLAN was born April 21, 1888 in the little log cabin that still stands on the north side of the road about three miles east of Dotsero. John and Eliza QUINLAN homesteaded the place and wintered the first bunch of cattle to be wintered in Eagle County. He did so by cutting the grass on the river bottom for hay. QUINLAN later sold the place to John LANGTON and moved to the new area of McCoy where they were some of the earliest settlers. Mr. QUINLAN built the first water wheel in that area.
Elizabeth grew up in the McCoy area and spent most of her life there. She was a member of the first graduating class of Eagle County High School in 1910. She taught school in Colorado for 41 years, 27 of them at McCoy. Long after she retired she was still doing private tutoring for children that were having trouble readng, etc. She was still tutoring children while living in an apartment in Glenwood Springs after she had passed her 80th birthday.
Elizabeth married Frank Bedell Nov. 26, 1925. They lived in the McCoy area and for years owned and operated the Copper Spur grocery store and Post Office.
Mr. and Mrs. BEDELL had two daughters, Mrs. James (Dorothy) BELLUCHIE of Grand Junction, Colorado and Mrs. Eloff (Virginia) WHEELER of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Yesterday she was here among us. The sparkle in her eyes and her keen wit made the day a little brighter for everyone who came in contact with her. Today she is gone and we are left with the memories. As she crossed over the Great Divide those of us she left behind with many beautiful and lasting memories are: her two daughters, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was the tie that bound her nieces and nephews together with a love for her and each other that will not be broken by her passing.
Elizabeth BEDELL was carried that "last mile" by eight of her second generation nephews: Wayne RANDALL, Dan RULE and Gene MOSHER of Eagle, Colo.; Mark and Don SCARROW of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Larry LEWIS of Rifle, Colo.; Richard LEWIS of Morrison, Colo. and Larry RULE of Brighton, Colo. A fitting tribute to a great lady.
