A GOOD CITIZEN PASSES AWAY. OTTO BERGMAN LAID TO REST AT RED CLIFF SUNDAY WITH SERVICES CONDUCTED BY I.O.O.F.
Another old-time resident of Eagle county passed away when Otto BERGMAN died in St. Mary's hospital in Grand Junction, April 23, 1945.
Born in Sweden Nov. 15, 1883, Mr. BERGMAN came to the United States in 1901, and lived for a time in Michigan. In 1905 he came to Pando and was engaged in timber work there and later went to Red Cliff, where he had been associated with the Fleming Lumber & Mercantile Co. since 1914. In 1919 he became a member of the firm and was so connected at the time of his death. When the company opened an office in Minturn and a saw mill on Gore creek he moved to that town two years ago.
Mr. BERGMAN was a public spirited loyal citizen in his adopted country. He served on the board of trustees of Red Cliff for a number of years, and was the town's mayor for two or three terms.
He was a charter member of the Red Cliff lodge of I.O.O.F., which was organized in 1916. He took an active part in the lodge's affairs and was noble grand for two terms. He also was a charter member of the Rebekah lodge of Gilman.
In 1915 he was married to Sophia PETERSON in Denver. To this union were born two sons, Pvt. Roy Harold, who was recently inducted into the army, and is stationed at Camp Maxey, Tex.; and Robt. Herman, who is employed by the General Electric Company at Schenectady, N.Y. All survive and were present at the funeral. There is also one granddaughter, Helen Ann HERGMAN.
Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian church in Red Cliff Sunday afternoon, with Rev. CARLSON of the Leadville Lutheran church reading the funeral service. The Odd Fellows lodge attended in a body and the impressive funeral and burial service of that order were performed for a beloved brother.
During the services, a trio consisting of Mrs. NORDLANDER, Mrs. OWENS, and Miss MANUS, sang "Old Rugged Cross," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "God Will Take Care of You," Mrs. McILNAY accompanying on the piano.
Pall bearers were Emil ERLANDSON, R. R. GRANT, C. L. GRANT, Ralph MARFITANO, Malcom McLEOD, and Merritt DISMANT.
The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Red Cliff.
