Eagle Valley Enterprise - July 7, 1983

Former state wrestling champion and 1983 Eagle Valley High School graduate Ronald Ray Abbey, 17, died July 1 when the motorcycle he was driving left Brush Creek Road and crashed. Slightly injured in the accident was Victor D. Satterfield, 17, a passenger on the vehicle.
Police reports said neither Abbey nor Satterfield was wearing a helmet or eye protection.
The Colorado State Patrol reported Abbey was driving a 1980 Suzuki 750 northbound on Brush Creek Road at an "excessive speed" when the cycle went off the left side of the road on a right-hand turn .8 miles south of Eagle.
The cycle then traveled 74 feet in a ditch, rolled twice and ejected both Abbey and Satterfield.
The report said Abbey died of sever head injuries as a result of the 8:25 p.m. accident.
Abbey's death was the 13th traffic fatality of the year in CSP District 4C, which includes the Eagle, Glenwood Springs, Leadville and Vail areas.
Abbey was the son of Douglas and Betty Abbey of Eagle.
