Nona George was born at Valley View, Tex., December 16, 1877. She went with her parents to Oregon for a short while, thence to Denver, Colo., and, at the age of sixteen years, to Breckenridge, Colo. where on October 13, 1897 she was united in marriage with George Albert Gates of Breckenridge. Soon after their marriage the couple came to live on their homestead on Derby Mesa near Burns, Colo. Here lived the remainder of their lives, and here were their nine children, all of whom are living, born. Her husband was one of the first settlers on Derby mesa. He preceded her in death seven years ago.

Mrs. Gates leaves to mourn her death, her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth George; four sons, James, Frank, Albert and Lemley Gates, five daughters, Mrs. Ruth Albertson, Mrs. Mary Wurtsmith, Mrs. Berta Albertson, Miss Marie Gates, and Miss Edith Gates; also sixteen grand children, all of Burns, two sisters, Mrs. Alice Colburn of Englewood, Colo. and Mrs. Edna Hesse of Le Grande, Ore.

Mrs. Gates passed away at her ranch home on Derby Mesa, after a very short illness, on November 7, 1935, and was laid to rest in Cedar Hill cemetery at Gypsum November 8, 1935. Funeral services were largely attended, the little Methodist church being crowded to overflowing with neighbors and friends from over the county. Rev. T. B. McDivitt conducted the services, while the discourse was delivered by Rev. Ivan Olsen. Mrs. Gates was greatly beloved by her neighbors and all who knew her, and will be greatly missed.
