PIONEER WOMAN OF EAGLE COUNTY DIES.
Mrs. E.E. GLENN passed away at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, April 10, at the family home in Eagle.
For several weeks the deceased had been failing in health, and for the past ten days had been gradually sinking, growing weaker, until Wednesday morning she passed away. Thurs ended the life of a wonderfully fine woman, one of the most cheerful, uncomplaining persons the writer ever knew. For nearly thirty-five years a cripple, in pain a great deal of the time, she never complained to others of her trouble, always happy and cheery, sympathizing with the troubles of others.
Ellen B. O'NEILL was born in County Cork, Ireland, June 4, 1962. At the age of twenty years she migrated to America, coming directly to Colorado, joining a sister at Central City. Shortly afterward she went to Leadville and in 1883 came to this valley. She conducted a hotel at Dotsero, in the building now occupied by Nels YOST, and was there during the days of the Carbonate excitement, when Dotsero was the outfitting point for the hundreds of prospectors rushing to the new discovery. Here she met and married, in 1886 or 1887, Frank BELDING. To this union were born three children, Ralph E., now a merchant of Eagle, and a son and daughter, who died in infancy. In 1893 Mr. and Mrs. BELDING moved to Eagle, where he opened a mercantile business, of which E. E. Glenn & Company is the direct successor, and the oldest mercantile establishment in Eagle county. In February, 1899, her husband died, and she carried on the business and devoted her life to raising her young son, Ralph.
A few months after her husband's death, Mrs.GLENN fell while going about her duties in the store, and received injuries to her hip. This developed into a permanent injury and the remainder of her life was spent as a cripple. But the handicap and suffering never daunted her courage. She never complained of her lot, and carried on, an example of fortitude to others less unfortunate. In 1902, she was married to E. E. Glenn, with whom she has lived happily through the years.
The deceased is survived by her husband, E. E. GLENN, and son, Ralph E. BELDING, of Eagle; three sisters, Mrs. Mary HARRINGTON of Denver, Colo.; Miss Nora O'NEILL, Lowell, Ariz.; Mrs. M. STRONG, Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Con O'NEILL, Lowell, Ariz.; a nephew, H. J. HARRINGTON, Rock Springs, Wyo., and a niece, Mrs. May DOYLE, Denver, Colo. The sister, Mrs. HARRINGTON, was with her sister during her last days, and the nephew, H. J. HARRINGTON, came on from Rock Springs to attend the funeral Friday.
Mass was held for the soul of the deceased lady at the Catholic church in Eagle this, Friday morning, and the body was laid in its last resting place in the cemetery at Eagle. The services were attended by a great concourse of truly sorrowing friends, for she was a greatly beloved lady, who had lived a full and satisfactory life, and the community suffers a real loss in her demise.
