Yampa woman killed in accident
Debby Brethauer, 34, died of suffocation April 3 after being pinned beneath a pickup truck while on the job at the Finger Rock fish rearing unit, a state-run operation. Brethauer had resided on-site. According to Sargeant John Warner of the Routt County Sheriff’s Department, just prior to the accident Brethauer was driving a 1980 Chevy Luv pickup truck used at the fish rearing unit to dispense fish food. One wheel of the truck apparently got
stuck on a low concrete barrier while Brethauer was feeding fish. She left the site to get a hydraulic jack with which to extricate the Chevy pickup, returning in a different truck. Brethauer got underneath the Chevy pickup while it was jacked up, the truck slipped off the jack and pinned the victim face down to the ground. About an hour after Brethauer died of suffocation, Fish Supervisor James Hicken found her and called the sheriff’s department to report the
accident. Warner said he and Coroner Dayle Hammock estimated the time of death to be between 10 a.m. and 11:54 a.m., when Hicken 's call came into the sheriff’s office. Warner said he is seeking the statement of a farmer who saw Brethauer return to the accident scene with the hydraulic jack. Once he has that testimony, Warner said the case would be closed.
