FORMER SHERIFF OF COUNTY DIES IN IOWA. Marion J. HENRY Passed Away At The Age Of 77--Was Rio Grande Engineer And Sheriff Of County For Many Years.
One of the prominent figures in the history of Eagle county during the early years of the century, passed away at Madison, Ia., March 27. Marion J. HENRY, Rio Grande locomotive engineer, ranch man and sheriff of the county for eight years passed away in a Madison hospital after only a few hours illness.
Born in Milford, Ind., January 25, 1864, the deceased was past 77 years of age at the time of his death. Early in life he identified himself with railroad work, being only eighteen years old when he went to work for the Santa Fe railroad in Marceline, Mo., in 1882. In 1891, he came to Colorado and went to work as a fireman for the Denver & Rio Grande railroad, working between Salida and Minturn. He became a locomotive engineer on that road in 1898, and continued in that service until 1908, when he was granted a leave of absence.
Mr. HENRY was prominent in Republican party politics in the county all during his life here. In 1908 he was elected sheriff of the county and served the county faithfully in that capacity for eight years. He retired from that position voluntarily in 1916, refusing the nomination at his party's hands.
He was always interested in farming and raising livestock. At one time he owned the ranch adjoining Minturn, now owned by J. Perry OLSON, where he bred draft horses for some years. On retiring from the sheriff's office Mr. HENRY purchased a ranch near Fruita, Colo., where he lived for a number of years. In 1923, he reentered the employ of the Santa Fe Railroad. He retired from that service in 1938, and he and Mrs. HENRY had lived in Madison since.
September 24, 1893, Mr. Henry was married to Miss Gertrude McMILLEN, a sister of the late Mrs. Dora GRIENER, and Mrs. Elizabeth DaLEE, women prominent in the affairs of the county. To this union were born two children--a son, Marion W., of Fort Madison, Ia., and a daughter, Mrs. Charles W. CULLEY, of Indianapolis, Ind. Besides the widow and two children there are two grandchildren who survive.
Mr. HENRY was a member of the United Brethren church; Eagle Lodge No. 43, A. F. & A. M., Minturn; Commandry No. 17, Knight Templar, Salida, Colo.; and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, No. 488, Grand Junction, Colo.
Mr. HENRY had been in his usual health up to a few hours before his death. He had been planting the garden at his home all day, when late in the afternoon he came to the house and complained of being short of breath. Mrs. HENRY called a doctor, who said there was nothing alarming about his condition, but recommended that he go to the hospital for a few days and rest up. At ten thirty he went to the hospital, went to his room unassisted and retired. He said he felt alright, but at 11:15 he was dead. A weak heart had refused to work any longer.
He was buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Fort Madison, with Masonic services.
Always a public spirited man, Marion HENRY left his mark in the history of the community in which he lived and the county, and scores of people in the county who remember him will be sorry to learn of his death.
