LEONARD HORN, 76, DIES; FUNERAL SERVICES TODAY.
Funeral services for Arthur Leonard HORN, a prominent longtime rancher in Eagle County, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Eagle Community United Methodist Church.
Mr. HORN died Sunday, Aug. 4, at Aurora Presbyterian Hospital in Aurora, at the age of 76.
His death came 10 days after he was thrown off a young horse while riding on his ranch near Wolcott. Mr. HORN refused treatment after the accident, but was hospitalized Friday at the Vail Valley Medical Center when injury pains became more severe. He was airlifted from Vail to the hospital in Aurora for treatment of a torn kidney and possible other internal injuries.
Mr. HORN was an Eagle County native who earned nationwide recognition for his efforts to preserve Western range land. He frequently traveled to Washington, D.C.,to lobby on behalf of the cattle industry against what he felt were undue pressures from recreational and environmental groups.
He was involved in the American Quarterhorse Association, National Public Lands Council, Society for Range Management, National Cutting Horse Association, Western Stock Show Association, National Cattlemen's Association, Colorado Cattlemen's Association, Eagle County Soil Conservation District and other agricultural organizations.
Mr. HORN served as a judge for the American Quarterhorse Association for 25 years and was a member of the Colorado Agriculture Commission for 13 years. He was also a member of numerous advisory committees for the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service.
Mr. HORN spent his entire lifetime as a rancher, and continuously tried to persuade other ranchers to improve their rangeland through proper erosion control and development of stock ponds.
He was born June 17, 1909, in McCoy, where his parents, Arthur and Lulu HORN, were early day ranchers. He attended school in McCoy, and started his own cattle herd at the age of 13.
In 1931, at the age of 22, he established his V-Eleven Ranch near Wolcott.
Mr. HORN received many honors for his lifelong dedication to the livestock industry. In 1965, Colorado State University at Fort Collins honored him as Livestock Man of the Year. In 1981 he received the first Colorado Cattlemen's Gold Award for distinguished service.
His most recent award was a letter of commendation from Robert BURFORD, director of the Bureau of Land Management in Washington, D.C.
He was a past member of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association Board of Control, and past president of the EagleCounty Stockgrowers Association. He was previously active in the Eagle Valley Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau, and was a member of the Eagle Community United Methodist Church and Club 20. He was also a contributing member for many years to the National Republican Party.
Mr. HORN was married June 15, 1972, in Taos, N.M.,to the former Evelyn LaGROW.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jean SMITH of Eagle and Jody MONROE of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; two stepdaughters, Mary Lou MATTAS of Grand Junction and Trudy DOWEN of Lamar; one brother, Harold G. HORN of California; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Steve GOODIER will officiate at today's funeral services. Burial will follow at Sunset View Cemetery in Eagle.
Farnum-Richardson Mortuary of Glenwood Springs is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagle Community United Methodist Church Building Fund, or to the Colorado Cattlemen's Association Endowment Trust Fund, 220 Livestock Exchange Building, Denver, Colo. 80216.
