Description

From the time the first homesteaders arrived in the early 1880s, this small mountain town has proven to be a community that knows itself and is willing to take chances. The proof is in the town's pioneer history. Consider the vision of the many immigrants who looked at the raw land, recognized the potential for fine farming country, and did the back-breaking work of making it happen. Factor in the determination of the Ladies' Aid Society women who were the driving force for civic improvements and the protection of the community's morals. This community was also spunky enough to fight for establishment of a County High School and compassionate enough to welcome the County Poor Farm, providing the earliest pioneers of the county a safe and comfortable place to live out their final days. The Gypsum that exists today is a product of its rich history.
